可以说，不了解欧洲的宗教和神话，就谈不上了解欧洲的文化、历史和艺术。教堂喻示人间天国的两世对立，教堂建筑身姿多彩、气度恢弘、美不胜收、令人震撼，叹为观止，所以教堂不但成为欧洲的最重要景点和地标，也是游历欧洲的永恒的主题。全球近两千教堂多数在欧洲。欧洲教堂风格多样，除传统巴舍里卡式、巴西利亚式、拱券结构的罗马式、拜占庭式、尖顶结构的哥特式及巴洛克、洛可可等，还有很多时尚强烈的现代风格的教堂。由于教堂级别不同，建筑特色也会有所不同，如主教坐堂、大教堂、教堂、礼拜堂等。不同教派也会有风格不同的教堂，如天主教、新教、东正教等。此外还有很多鲜为人知的特色教堂如人骨教堂、木教堂、倾斜教堂、水上教堂等。
